Shimmering Moods brings you ‘Entering and Emerging’, the second full-length album by Melbourne based composer and musician Zoltan Fecso. Following up his debut ‘Shimmer Raga’ on Hush Hush Records, Zoltan expands on his distinctive pointillist compositions, continuing to explore simplicity and limitation.

Listeners familiar with Zoltan’s music will recognize the cyclic guitar tones that make up the foundation of his work but might notice a new sonic tactility to ‘Entering and Emerging’, which reflects Zoltan’s time as artist in residence in the French Pyrenees.

Zoltan uses field recordings from the area as a way of contextualizing space whilst allowing the sounds to act as compositional elements themselves. The opening track ‘Surroundings’ features a hydroelectric generator providing a distinct tonal drone around which the piece shifts and develops. ‘In Place’ reflects the properties of physical space; each note being recorded in various parts of a room.

Using limitation as a discipline stemmed from a particularly turbulent time in Zoltan’s life, which led to the therapeutic deconstruction of his writing approach. An interest in the 1970’s New York school of Minimalist music, as well as a love of modern art prompted the questions which eventually led him to his pointillist manifesto.

The post-impressionist pointillist painters’ understanding of colour theory led to the combination of single coloured dots to form images. Adapting this technique to sound is what began Zoltan’s intention to reveal the underlying complexities in simple forms through their cumulative impact.

‘Entering and Emerging’ invites the listener in and attempts to share the complexities that are ever present within simplicity.
