about

These two pieces were recorded in Northern NSW, Australia, where Claire and I were house sitting in February, just days before the COVID lockdowns and travel bans.

It rained almost every day. The outside soundscape changed with the different stages of rainfall. 'It Rained Today' was recorded just after a heavy fall ended, big drops hitting the ground and birds singing.
There were a few days of consistent rain which formed little streams, recorded on 'Then, Continued to Rain'.

Once we arrived home to Melbourne and had to stay indoors, I really enjoyed listening to field recordings to reconnect with nature. During lockdown I (finally) fixed up a broken Fostex 250 tape machine I bought more than a year ago. I listened back to these rain recordings and dubbed some pointillist guitar phrases over them. Everything was recorded and mixed on the Fostex 250 onto a 4-track cassette tape.

The pieces are inspired by the work of Kazuya Matsumoto, who captures nature and instrumental recordings on location, often making them indistinguishable in beautiful ways. Matsumoto's work often references water.
